For the next few editions of Watkins Enews, we would like to share some interesting sales facts regarding natural and organic products.
Organic product sales have increased 17.1% over 2007 which is $24.6 billion dollars. This study included organic foods and beverages and non-food categories which includes organic fibers, personal care products and pet food. Organic food which is 93% of all organic products sold in the U.S. grew 15.8% in 2008 to reach $22.9 billion dollars. Organic food sales account for 3.5% of all food product sales in the U.S. This number has nearly doubled in the past five years.
Non-food organic product sales have grown by 39.4% to $1.6 billion dollars. The sales of non-food organic products are growing faster than organic food.
US sales of organic food and beverages have grown from $1 billion dollars in 1990 to an estimated $20 billion dollars in 2007, and are projected to reach nearly $23.6 billion dollars in 2008. Total U.S. organic sales, including food and non-food products, were $17.7 billion dollars in 2006, up 21% from 2005. They are estimated to have reached $21.2 billion dollars in 2007 and are projected to surpass $25 billion dollars in 2008.
The organic industry has increased 56% between 2002 and 2006!
