WINONA, Minn., (Nov. 03, 2009) — J.R. Watkins Natural Apothecary has received Natural
Products Association certification for its newest line extensions; Daily Cleansing Cream, Divine
Day Cream, Nourishing Night Cream, Medicated Lip Balm, Peppermint Foot Scrub, Aloe and
Green Tea Shampoo and Body Wash. With the addition of these products, the company now
has the second most products certified out of fourteen companies that currently carry the seal.
This highly regarded seal represents natural products that are formulated with at least 95%
natural ingredients made from renewable and sustainable resources.
The average woman slathers over 125 chemicals onto her scalp, body, face and lips each day.
Wouldn't be such a big deal if they were all cleared by health officials, but only 11% of the

Meeting the NPA Standard
Products must follow strict guidelines set out by the Natural Products
Association to carry the seal, including:
· At least 95 percent truly natural ingredients or ingredients that are
derived from natural sources.
· No ingredients with any potential suspected human health risks.
· No processes that significantly or adversely alter the purity/effect of the natural
ingredients.
· Ingredients that come from a purposeful, renewable/plentiful source found in nature
(flora, fauna, mineral).
· Processes that are minimal and don't use synthetic/harsh chemicals or otherwise
dilute purity.
· Non-natural ingredients only when viable natural alternative ingredients are
unavailable and only when there are absolutely no suspected potential human health
risks.

For the next few editions of Watkins Enews, we would like to share some interesting sales facts regarding natural and organic products.
Organic product sales have increased 17.1% over 2007 which is $24.6 billion dollars. This study included organic foods and beverages and non-food categories which includes organic fibers, personal care products and pet food. Organic food which is 93% of all organic products sold in the U.S. grew 15.8% in 2008 to reach $22.9 billion dollars. Organic food sales account for 3.5% of all food product sales in the U.S. This number has nearly doubled in the past five years.
Non-food organic product sales have grown by 39.4% to $1.6 billion dollars. The sales of non-food organic products are growing faster than organic food.
US sales of organic food and beverages have grown from $1 billion dollars in 1990 to an estimated $20 billion dollars in 2007, and are projected to reach nearly $23.6 billion dollars in 2008. Total U.S. organic sales, including food and non-food products, were $17.7 billion dollars in 2006, up 21% from 2005. They are estimated to have reached $21.2 billion dollars in 2007 and are projected to surpass $25 billion dollars in 2008.
The organic industry has increased 56% between 2002 and 2006!

2 cups/500 mL all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp/7.5 mL baking soda
1 tsp/5 mL Purest GroundCinnamon 6 oz
1/2 tsp/2.5 mL Organic Nutmeg
1/2 tsp/2.5 mL salt
1 1/2 cups/375 mL sugar
12 tbsp/180 mL butter (1 ½ sticks), softened
1 egg
1/2 tsp/2.5 mL Original Double-Strength Vanilla
1/4 cup/60 mL molasses
2 cups/500 mL all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp/7.5 mL baking soda
1 tsp/5 mL Purest GroundCinnamon 6 oz
1/2 tsp/2.5 mL Organic Nutmeg
1/2 tsp/2.5 mL salt
1 1/2 cups/375 mL sugar
12 tbsp/180 mL butter (1 ½ sticks), softened
1 egg
1/2 tsp/2.5 mL Original Double-Strength Vanilla
1/4 cup/60 mL molasses
Directions
Preheat oven to 350F/180C. In a medium bowl whisk flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. In a shallow bowl set aside 1/2 cup/125 mL sugar.With an electric mixer beat butter, remaining sugar, egg, vanilla, and molasses until well blended. Combine with dry ingredients until dough forms. Roll dough into 1 inch/2.5 cm balls and dip in 1/2 cup/125 mL reserved sugar. Arrange on a baking sheet, about 3-inches/7.5-cm apart. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes. Makes 3 dozen.
